Cape Canaveral Population: 10,034 The oldest named city in Brevard, The City of Cape Canaveral was first named Cape of Currents by Ponce de Leon in 1513, and still uses the lighthouse built in 1868. During the past thirty years, space travel has made Cape Canaveral well known. To the North is Port Canaveral which offers cruise lines, cargo lines and shippers, businesses and vacationers the capabilities of a first-class deepwater port. The Port at Cape Canaveral is the second busiest US port for passenger cruise ships.  It is located on the Atlantic Ocean approximately midpoint between Miami and Jacksonville and is slightly over 50 miles east of Orlando. It consists of 1.9 square-miles. Adjacent to the north side of the Port is the John F. Kennedy Space Center, America's gateway into space.
